Greenhouse?
So my husband & I went to the Greenhouse restaurant in Harvard Square this morning and we were told that they are closing as of Sunday. WTF? Does anyone know why? The waiter said something about the owner dying but I didn't get all of it. I am totally bummed- we've been going there every Friday for six years. The restaurant has been in the Square for 30+ years. What's going on? And does anyone know a good place to go for breakfast in the West Cambridge area, if the Greenhouse is going to be gone?

Oh Thank God
I worked there this past fall. There were so many rats, and I am sort of surprised nobody ever complained about them getting into the dining area during business hours because I saw that happen. They never threw out baked goods, just waited for them to all get bought, which was rather slow. The end result was that a week after the oven broke one time we were trying to sell people cake with ants on it.I do recall the owner being a rather elderly gentleman. Really, you shouldn't be so upset, but the fries were nice. I will always miss gettting them for free.
PS- Leo's across from the Garage is nice and friendly. Closer to Central there is Hot Off The Press and some lovely place the name of which I forget that made me a delicious benedict.

Re: Oh Thank God
Hey, I know you!And yeah.. Good riddance.
I was there once and they screwed up my order BIG TIME, wouldn't fix it. They were majorly majorly rude, they gave everyone but me water, they spilled my shake on me and didn't replace it or apologize, and they overcharged me and expected me to pay?!
Run by homophobes, they weren't too keen on a friendly theatre group coming in. Pathetic. I was the only one who heard that comment, when I returned from my trek to Au Bon Pain to use the restroom since "WE'RE GRANDFATHERED IN WE DON'T HAVE TO LET YOU USE THE BATHROOM LADY!!!" when all I did was ask "excuse me, but do you know where the nearest public restroom is?" My castmates had been so excited to go there I kept my mouth shut, but man, I was glad to get out of there, and never went back.
Tis no loss at all.

Yeah, sorry about the pissy waitstaff. From what I recall working there made me pretty bitchy too. And more importantly, yeah. I almost forgot to mention that the totally close-minded managers got a kick out of making fun of the trans lady who owns Cardullo's whenever she tried to come in.PS I know you too! (I've been insanely busy but we should still hang when I am back form Baltimore)

Other sites for breakfast are up in Central Square : The Brookline (on the sidestreet around from Hi-Fi Pizza), Picante's does breakfast on weekends, as does the Asgard and the Tavern on the Square does a Breakfast buffet, as does Sydney's. The Middle East and the Phoenix Landing do breakfast on weekends (though best to avoid the Phoenix if worldcup season is on).
The Green house has been there for as long as I can remember (pre-80s probably) so it has had a long run for a business in the square.
I think ate there maybe 3 times over all the years, as it was often too busy to get a seat in. I always thought the food was mediocre at best, but I have that feeling about most places that serve breakfast in the area. The Buffet at the Tavern on the Square is good, but a bit pricey and their coffee is not great. The buffet at Sydney's is ok, but not outstanding, and very pricey.

In Davis Square, Johnny D's has a lovely brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, with live light jazz in the background.

At the far end of Central Square, Sunny's Diner on Landsdowne Street is open for breakfast and lunch only, but they open at 6 am (8 am on Sundays).

The Greenhouse, etc.
The Greenhouse was ok.Why don't you try Lee's Sandwich Shop on Church St.? They make great eggs. I used to debate with a friend at some lengths which was better Lee's or Leo's. Leo's had special, but in that era, Lee's was absolutely consistent in everything they served.
I've been going to cheap eats in Harvard Square for 25 years, and over that time, the Greenhouse has actually been near the bottom of the bunch. Let us celebrate some of the departures:
* The Tasty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasty_Sand
* The Mug 'n' Muffin. This was right in the square across from Out of Town News. You could get a mug of coffee and a muffin for less than $2 (it was probably just one dollar). Pancakes, etc., that were a heck of a lot better than that new IHOP. There was an interesting crowd of retired people who would hang out in the back at around 10 AM and talk about the past. When the Mug and Muffin closed, they stopped hanging out in Harvard Square. Sad.

* The Wursthaus. Really broad menu, but at heart a German-style deli.
* Nick's Beef and Brew. This was up near the Law School right around where the West Side Lounge is (perhaps that's the actual spot). Greek food at grad student prices. Once I took a notable Marxist literary critic to dinner there, and he insisted on drinking their wine, which was pretty scary. He also was the only person I ever saw who ordered chicken livers from that establishment. Since they were rarely ordered, his plate probably had two pounds of livers on it.

And -- Oh man, they made a really awesome huge greek salad.

Re: The Greenhouse, etc.
man, that Tasty article on wikipedia needs some cleanin'. I had never even thought to look it up. I loved the Tasty, and will spend some of my Wikipedia copyediting time on it tonight. Thanks for linking it.
